Even cooler is the story of Nick Roberts Global Rally Team. Their race car burned to the ground a few weeks back at Oregon Trail but they are in the hunt for the Super Production Championship and had no choice but to build a new rally car in just 26 days. Josh Tons talked with Nick last week and got the rundown for Build Race Party.

Out of the ashes of Oregon, Nick Roberts Global Rally returns for Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally

In the blink of an eye what seemed to be a relatively uneventful rally can turn into a very scary incident. On May 3rd 2014, this was the case for 2013 Rookie of the year Nick Roberts and co-driver Rhianon Gelsomino as their 2013 Subaru WRX STi suddenly caught fire on stage during the 2014 Oregon Trail Rally presented by Rally America.

The Oregon Trail Rally provides some of the most diverse terrain of any Rally America event, with fast stretches combined with twisting foothill runs providing a very competitive environment where a slight mistake can end a team's event.

From the start of the event the Nick Roberts Global Rally Team Subaru STi was nearly flawless, with the only issue being a puncture on stage 3 that cost the team to lose 20 seconds. When asked about the event prior to the incident Nick Roberts stated, "I was getting warmed up and getting faster with each stage. We were really starting to eat away at the time gap… I planned to drive flat out 100% committed to the notes having complete confidence in the car."

Entering stage 8 of the event Roberts and Gelsomino sat third in the super production class, 28 seconds behind the class leader David Sterckx/Karen Jankowski and 9 seconds behind second place Dillion Van Way/Andrew Edwards. As the battle intensified Nick and Rhianon left the start of stage 8, never expecting what was to come next. Suddenly, while running flat out, the prop shaft broke, puncturing a 6"x3" hole through the Kevlar fuel tank protection and into the fuel tank itself."

As smoke began to enter the vehicle, Rhianon and I realized we were on fire, I stepped on the brake there was an instantaneous flash fire in the car", stated Roberts while providing details of the incident."
